Heartland 2070_edited.png

The Central Florida Regional Planning Council brings communities together to plan for, prepare for, and respond to the regional issues that matter most. Building on Heartland 2060, Heartland 2070 will help the region prepare for changing conditions through 2070, including emerging technologies such as advanced air mobility, agricultural innovation, data centers, and other developments that may shape its future.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who joined us on August 5 for the Heartland 2070: Land Use, Infrastructure, and the Digital Future discussion. Your participation and perspectives are helping shape the regional conversation as we plan for the changes, opportunities, and challenges facing Central Florida through 2070.

We’d appreciate your feedback. Please take a few minutes to complete the post-event survey and help inform future Heartland 2070 discussions and resources.

Data Centers and Water Use: Myths vs. Reality

Economic Considerations

Data centers can contribute to local economies through tax revenue and job creation, but they may also require substantial investment in supporting infrastructure.

Environmental Considerations

These facilities typically have high energy and water demands and may contribute to increased greenhouse gas emissions—an important consideration in Florida’s resource-sensitive environment.

Land Use and Zoning

Because data centers require large sites, their development can drive land use changes, including the conversion of agricultural or undeveloped land to industrial uses.

Infrastructure Demands

The significant power needs of data centers can strain existing electrical grids, often requiring upgrades or expansion. Their resource consumption may also influence the cost and availability of utilities for surrounding communities.

Community Character

Operational elements such as cooling systems and backup generators can generate noise, and the scale of these facilities may affect the visual character of nearby areas.
