The DeSoto County Comprehensive Plan is the guiding policy document for land use and development in unincorporated DeSoto County. This update ensures our community is prepared for the future while preserving what makes us unique. Florida law requires every city and county to update its comprehensive plan regularly to reflect community needs.
A community's Comprehensive Plan affects daily life like where homes are built, how traffic flows, the protection of natural spaces, and the future look and feel of our community.
The Comprehensive Plan aims to:
-
Guide future growth and development
-
Enhance quality of life for residents
-
Protect rural character and natural resources
-
Improve infrastructure and mobility
-
Support economic opportunities

The purpose of the plan update is to:
-
Identify major issues which are specific concerns related to the current and future growth and development of the County
-
Assess the degree to which plan objectives have been completed
-
Assess both the success and shortcomings of the plan
-
Identify ways the plans should be changed by responding to changing conditions and trends, the need for new data and changes in state requirements and regional plans
-
Ensure effective intergovernmental coordination
