Assets

The City of Fort Meade’s location is a key asset.  Located near Peace River, the City provides residents and visitors with recreational opportunities including kayaking and fishing.  The city parks are used by residents and are viewed as assets by the community. Fort Meade’s history is evident along Broadway Street which serves as the downtown main street area where the Fort Meade Historical Museum is located along with local businesses.  The City is also home to approximately 31 churches.

A major employer in Fort Meade is Peace River Packing.  The company farms over 3,900 acres of citrus and operates a state-of-the-art packing facility on its original property in Fort Meade. Peace River Packing markets fresh fruit throughout the United States and the world.  West of the Fort Meade corporate limits is the Streamsong Resort which includes three A-list golf courses, a spa, a lakeside lodge, and other amenities.  Visitors from all over the world travel to Streamsong.

Developable Land

The developable land in the city is depicted on Map 2.  According from data from the Polk County Property Appraiser, approximately 699 acres are vacant in the City limits.  Approximately an additional 2,272 acres in the city have agricultural uses.

Map 3 indicates the Future Land Use designations in the city.  The Commercial Future Land Use designation follows US 17 and US 98 as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street.
